Autobiography, 1838.

Ms. copy of an autobiography of John Chandler, soldier and public servant from Monmouth, Maine. Chandler's narrative describes his service on the ship-of-war Arnold during the Revolution, his move to the district of Maine in 1783, and subsequent positions in various town and county offices. During his service as Sheriff of Kennebec County (1808-12), he reorganized what had been a corrupt department, and settled many land claim disputes in the district. As brigadier General in the War of 1812, he fought in upstate New York and was wounded and captured at the Battle of Stony Creek; and as U.S. Senator from 1820-29, he sponsored legislation to establish a U.S. arsenal at Augusta, Maine, and a military road from the Penobscot River to Mars Hill, Maine.
